Sound Design
An ear for innovative briefs.
I’m Kilian Fix, a sound designer and audio engineer in Berlin. I design sound for images, products, spaces and research, and I take on freelance projects that are creative and innovative, gladly between disciplines.
My background has two halves: musicology and audio communication, music and acoustics, design and measurement. So for every sound I first ask how it will be heard, and only then how it is made.
Four briefs, one method
01
“An image needs sound.”
Film, motion design, 3D and CGI, social media. Sound design, atmospheres and music that make movement and material audible: how glass feels, how heavy something is, how far a space reaches. The demo above shows how that sounds.
02
“A product needs a voice.”
Sonic branding, product and interface sounds, sound for devices and spaces. From the first idea through acoustic design and engineering to the finished, tested sound, tuned to the brand and to the people who live with it.
03
“A space should sound.”
Immersive, spatial sound for exhibitions, installations and public spaces. Multichannel, ambisonics and binaural, generative sound systems, room acoustics and loudspeakers: planned so the sound works in the room, not only on a screen.
04
“A study needs exact stimuli.”
Audio for science and research: precisely controlled stimuli for psychoacoustic experiments, listening tests, data sonification, acoustic measurements. Carefully documented, so results hold.
The method
Listen
First I listen: to the brief, the material, the place.
Understand
What should come across, and how is it perceived?
Design
Recording, synthesis, editing, spatial mixing.
Measure
Loudness, spectrum, room. Only then is a sound done.
The same four steps carry every brief: always the same craft, in different formats.
